The Caspian Sea has become the world’s most strategic geographical location as it has amassed almost one third of world’s undeveloped natural gas and oil deposits.
At present, this potentially strategic location is not only influencing regional politics but International politics as well, to a great extent.
Until the disintegration of U.S.S.R, this location was not a battlefield of politics as it was surrounded by erstwhile Soviet Union and one another nation, Iran.
Soon after the demise of U.S.S.R, the region happened to become strategically very important and came to be surrounded by five nations of Soviet Union and Iran.
Some analysts argue that America’s interest on the region is largely driven by geopolitics and not by the energy security. However, this piece of argument will not hold any credentials to a majority of people any way.
It does not seem logical that the U.S. government and its fleet of private energy companies have already invested $30 billion dollars in the Caspian basin, just to make those break away factions of Soviet, stand on their own without Russia. They further argue that this is how Uncle Sam wants to make those countries U.S. allies.
However, there are other countries spread over a vast area as that of African countries that need help but we hardly come across any substantial U.S. policy that is aimed towards those underprivileged and deprived nations, especially to make them their allies.
On the other hand, Russia openly recognizes the political and economic importance of the Caspian Sea and now it has asserting itself actively in this region to counter U.S. influence, while U.S. does it tacitly. As Vladimir Putin is never shy of playing his energy cards to dictate its terms that too to a great discomfort of U.S. that says Russia is just blackmailing us. Never mind, even U.S. is waiting for its turn via route of Iran. Once Iran is destroyed, U.S. machineries will be digging Caspian Sea truly deep.
The verbal and strategic war is already there, on marketing the oil and gas of Caspian to European market. In a bid to accomplish the war U.S. had tried or trying its level best to market oil via Georgia and Turkey where it was partially successful. Then, at that point of time Russia was only recovering from the past and was politically and economically weak.
In addition, most striking truth is if Europe will become dependent on Russia for oil and gas supply it would curtail the power of U.S. as in this condition a joint decision or policies of NATO and US or European Union and U.S. will be difficult. Moreover, Russia is already moving slowly to grab the European market.
In retrospect, this geographical location will hold prominence in the arena of international politics in coming years.
