Qatar schedule to host the meeting of major Gas Exporters countries in April, which has 14 member and hold 70 percent of the total world’s reserves, aims to shape another group along the lines of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to protect the rights of Exporting nations.
Iran’s oil minister, Kazem Vaziri-Hamaneh, emphasized to create OPEC-like group and confidently said that;
In the next meeting of the gas-exporting countries, they will decide about a gas OPEC.
But the Qatar energy minister, Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah, seems not to be convinced with his counterpart and suggests concentrating on existing group the Gas Exporting Country Forum as issue of gas is more complex than it appears. He said;
We have a forum that brings together gas-exporting countries that will meet next April in Doha and we should develop this.
Although majority of the principle oil exporters have agreed to form a gas cartel, but it will be only possible if Russia, the world’s biggest gas exporter will flag the green signal.
However Russian President Vladimir Putin applause the idea to forms a cooperation to help sufficient and secure supplies for customers, but firmly oppose to create OPEC-style group which coordinate their output to influence gas prices.
